Veryan Bay Reunion
Liverpool
15th
18th May 2009
So you
voted for
Liverpool
and so, we have cracked a smashing deal at the completely and expensively
refurbished Adelphi hotel, where for your one hundred and fifty nine pounds
(£159.00) you
will be able to enjoy full board at this splendid five star hostelry, restored
to its nineteen thirty four splendour. Stuck in the centre of the city’s old
shopping centre and within sight of its mainline railway station, its customer
only car park and with wheelchair access into the hotel and to all parts, I
think we are laughing sandbags.
To
coincide with Liverpool’s year as
European
City
of Culture, an enormous three tier shopping centre, as been built over the old
Queen’s dock, the first large scale, tide free dock in the world. It as been
fully excavated and can be viewed within the Chavass shopping area. Those unable
or unwilling to walk through the city’s traditional shops to these
impressively modern stores, restaurants and gardens, can board a bus with your
bus pass, within yards of the hotel. Of course there is still the Albert dock, a
ferry across the Mersey, the Western Approaches war rooms, the two beautiful
cathedrals, the Pier Head and Matthew Street’s bars and eateries and site of
the Cavern Club, with its Beatle memories all, within reasonable distance of the
Adelphi.
Saturday
at ten we will still have our A.G.M. with ‘up spirits’ at twelve,
refreshments will be available. The Veryan
Bay
dinner is as usual and there will be a raffle of donated items.
That
should take care of Saturday,
For Sunday
at no extra cost; we will board at our
usual time of ten o’clock, the coach which will take us to Southport, the best
seaside resort, north of Brighton, the whole area of
Southport
is as flat as a pancake, so easing the plight of shipmates with walking
difficulties. The resort boasts some of the best fish and chips in the
U.K.
and numerous tea shops. Once we have taken in the sights and refreshed
ourselves, the coach will tour the sea front, before driving through the
Lancashire countryside to Pilkington’s famous glass museum, The World of Glass
at
St Helens
, an ultra modern building with easy flat access, for the most part level
throughout. Glassblowing is demonstrated all day, a fully serviced café and a
well stocked gift shop, add interest to the many modern styled exhibits, in this
outstanding museum. There will be no waiting for the coach as it will be parked
adjacent to the building.
To make
this work however, it is absolutely essential you let Edward Johnson know by
12th January 2009 and make your booking direct with the Adelphi
Hotel by this date at 0871 222 0029 press option 3, quoting Reference Number VEAD8509
If you have a credit card then Adelphi will take a small booking deposit
It appears that the booking clerks acting for the Adelphi,
do not tap out that code 'VEAD', unless our shipmates let them know that it is
a 'group code' we are booking for. So, after shipmates select option three,
they need to say, 'the group code is VEAD etc.'
I will be
sending out a Flyer at beginning of 2009 reminding you in time for you to make
your booking.
I know it’s asking a
lot, as it can be difficult planning so far ahead, but take out the pleasure of
our reunion, which we won’t; it’s still promises to be a cracking, jolly
good weekend.
