I have been given your email by George Griffiths, from Servicepals.
I began this search to see if anyone remembered my father, William
Murphy, known as Billy. He served on Veryan Bay and HMS Newcastle.
I know he was in Palestine after 1945 and in the Med. He came
from Portadown Co. Armagh Northern Ireland and was born 15/7/29.
I hoped to find someone who knew daddy so that I could bring him
some cheer when he was ill but he has so sadly passed away just
in April.
so I suppose I'm doing this for me and maybe have something to
share with him in my heart.
If you can help at all, you would be helping more than you could
ever know.
thank you, regards Jane Pemberton

Graham,
Just a quick note to say I'll be sending some clippings down to
you today. I hope they are of some use to you. I've also included
a picture of my grandad (Wally Maddock) together with a copy of
his service record..
I was wondering if he could be added to the shipmates list on
the web page or would I have to be a member of the assoc. to have
his name on the list even though he is deceased.
many thanks

GED,
I have got more information regarding my late grandfather. he
was Petty Officer (seaman) WALLY MADDOCK D/SSX836455 served on
board the Veryan Bay in 1954. He also served on St. BridesBay,
and Kepple.
There has also been a mention of one of his mates who was only
known as Hawksley or Hooksley but no one was ever to know his
first name for some strange reason.
many thanks

Hello again,
I finally spoke to someone who knew my granddad 'P.O. Wally Maddock"
Mike Dormer informed me that he was in charge of the boys seaman's
mess. I had quite a long chat with him. It was great to speak
to someone who actually knew him all those years ago and I must
thank your website for this and especially to NIGEL WALLACE who
put me in touch with him.
I now have some old paper cuttings from the veryan which might
be of use to you.I,m still trying to find some old photographs
which have been lost some where about my nans house.
Would it be possible to have your home address so I could send
the copies to your house as I'not to clever on the computer side
of things.
My Kind Regards

Dear Dean,
It's such a long time ago I was on the Veryan Bay, I'm afraid
I can't remember your grandfather. Two people you could ask who
were on that
voyage (1954/55) who have e-mail addresses are Eric Gow who was
a wireless operator and Graham Ledbrook, a radio mechanic. Their
addresses
are eric.k.gow@talk21.com and gledbrook@aol.com
I'm attaching part of a large picture of the ship's company which
shows all the Petty Officers in 1955. Perhaps you could find him
and let me
know which one he is. It is a bit difficult because of the shadows,
but you might be able to single him out.
with best wishes,

Dear Sir,
I am trying to locate anyone who knew my Grandad " PETTY
OFFICER Walley Maddock (mines and demolitions)" My grandad
served on HMS VERYAN BAY during the early to mid 1950's and I
have some good photos of him onboard and at shore.
Sadley however my grandad passed away in 1989 and is still missed
very much as he was a great man to his famiily, he was in fact
our hero.
Would it be possible for you to place and add on your site for
me to try and contact his old shipmates.

Dear Graham,
I've just come across your excellent account of our voyage to
the Falklands and back through a chance aquaintance. Are there
many others from that trip in the association and are they likely
to be at the reunion in May? It's a long way for me to come, but
I'm tempted.

I've attached a pic of myself in the wireless office of the Veryan

Hello Graham,
I am happy to report that Mr.Morgan Peacock, son of my late old
friend and shipmate Harold (Geordie) Peacock crew member of Veryan
Bay 1945/6, has replied to my email.
Confessing to his computer illiteracy (which of us could not)
he explained that the delay in replying was due to having to rely
upon others to pass on messages, always a difficult situation
to control.
Interestingly I had told Morgan that in our family photograph
album there is a 'snap' of Geordie, myself, Frank Sharp and one
other identified only as Mick, taken in Sydney's Hyde Park early
in 1946. When Morgan passed on this information to his mother,
George's widow, she countered this by producing her own copy of
the same photograph. Not bad eh? Twelve thousand miles and forty
six years apart.
How is Frank Sharp these days? I see his name is listed as ex
crew member but there are no personal details, I seem to recall
someone saying that Frank's health was not the brightest.
Cheers from Dennis Blue in Adelaide.
Received 20th December 2001
Hello Graham,
My best wishes to all the old (?) crew for Christmas.
I refer to the email from Morgan Peacock published in newsletter
no.17. Unless there were two Peacocks aboard the Veryan Bay in
late '45 and early '46, Harold, known to us all then as Geordie,
was not only known to me but was a very good friend during the
several months I served on the old lady. These were the days of
her maiden voyage through the canal to Colombo, Singapore, Hong
Kong, Manila, Borneo and finally Australia.
The early pages of our family photograph album have a somewhat
faded 'snap' of myself with Geordie Peacock, Frank Sharp and one
other identified only as Mick, taken in Hyde Park, Sydney around
March '46. Another member of our gang of five oppos then was A/B
Geoff Blaney, not shown.
I've sent this information via email to Mr.Peacock together with
the address of Steve McKenna's great website which as you know
also features a good deal of the Veryan Bay's early history.
Unfortunately as is too often the case on the internet these days,
my email to Morgan Peacock has gone unacknowledged and unanswered.
Try to behave yourself over Christmas.
Best wishes from Dennis Blue.

It's been a while since I contacted you, but I just wanted to
pass these on to you.
When I went over to visit in July I found these photos and
I think I told you I knew I had a Christmas Card sent me as a
young girl with the Veryan Bay Hat, and I found it.
So, enclosed are some pictures.
The one entitled Barnes, is a picture of another crew member
of the Veryan Bay, name of Barnes, served the same time as my
Dad, and was a Barnardo Boy, came from the Barnardo Homes as an
orphan.
My dad took the picture of the parade I believe. I don't know
if it's the crew of the ship either, but if my Dad recalls the
parade some of the shipmates will also.

Dear Graham
It is with much sadness that I'm writing to let you know that
Paul Laity passed away yesterday in the early hours of the morning,
it was very unexpected, as he was not unwell. Joan Laity has given
her blessing to ask you to post a notice on the web site. The
funeral will take place on Tuesday at St Mary's church Yatton
Somerset, I am sorry to have once again been the bearer of bad
news, If anyone needs any details etc and doesn't want to contact
Joan at this sad time, I should be able to help, and would be
more than happy to do so.
yours sincerely

A Note From Chairman John Miller
The other day whilst browsing in a second-hand bookshop,
I bought Daniel Farson's autobiography. Reading through the second
chapter, which was about his father, Negley, I began to realise
that a page of my life aboard Veryan Bay had just been opened.
When I joined the ship I had been an avid reader of anything I
could get my hands on, I thought I knew it all, until I clashed
with the Veryan Bay's resident intellectual and communist, Paul
Laity. It soon became apparent to me, that I had read nothing
and knew nothing.
Paul introduced me to political theory and literature and
his insistence that I should read Negley Farson's "The Way
of the Transgressor" and with other books of similar substance,
lead me to understand just how little I knew.
As we all know Paul is no longer with us. His untimely
death a few weeks ago is a great loss to our association. His
ability to gather a crowd around him whenever he held forth and
his warm affection for our association, and the friends he had
in it, will be sorely missed. What makes it particularly sad is
that when we last saw Paul at Liverpool he was as ebullient as
ever and his health appeared to be on the mend.
Out A.G.M. at the Adelphi in Paul's opinion, was the best
he had been to.
A few of us travelled to Yatton for Paul's funeral, in
order to pay our respects and to offer our sympathy to Joan Laity,
who throughout this sad occasion managed to keep her composure.
David Macfarland who's life had been saved by Paul when we were
sailing back to Aden, addressed a prayer to Paul at his open grave
as a measure of his thanks.
The funeral of Shipmate Paul Laity took place on Tuesday
June 26th 2001 at the chuch of St. Mary the Virgin, Yatton at
1100.
Mourners : included Shipmates J. Miller, D. Macfarlane,
K. Macfarlain, Lewis Holmes, N. Mitchell & Tracey Magee.

I would like to thank all the members and wives who made me feel
so welcome at the reunion in Liverpool.it made me feel so much
closer to dad something that would not have been possible without
all of you, I really enjoyed hearing so many tales of his exploits

if not years to come, and could someone please ask John Miller
to tell me the titanic joke!!
Once again my heartfelt thanks to all of you. I know dad would

Graham just a quick note to let you know, my Dad Dave 'Rattler'
Morgan passed away peacefully a few hours ago after a long battle
against cancer. When we were told it was inoperable back in February
we had hoped he would last long enough for us to bring him up
for your reunion. But it wasn't to be I am afraid, but I am sure
he will be there in Spirit. He was a great bloke who will be sorely
missed and I knew he loved the Navy. All the best and have a great
reunion.

Graham, thanks for the quick reply. I phoned Dad for Easter
this morning and today he wasn't so good, he just heard that his
brother Bill in Portsmouth, who was a Lieutenant Commander, has
to go in a home. Sad, as Bill and my Dad would talk for hours
on the phone about the navy, which as they both said were "some
of the best years of their lives".
Much as I know he'd love to go to the reunion, it's impossible.
He's had a couple of bad spells in hospital, one lately, and as
he says, "I'm on so many pills I rattle now when I move".
It's not easy for anyone who used to be able to get about and
do things to have to confine himself to basically almost one room
when every movement means you're tired for ages after, and I'm
sure his days drag sometimes, and life can get frustrating. So
the newsletter would be a welcome change, and the membership fees
no problem.
Hopefully he will be motivated to write down a few stories, etc.
He was telling me one time about the Veryan Bay being torpedoed
by a dummy torpedo in Portland Harbour, said it put a big hole
in the ship, and they were the laughing stock of the navy for
being hit. Apparently they either didn't notice the red flag to
warn of harbour maneouvers, or someone forgot to put it up. He
said that the ship had to be fixed up and I think he mentioned
Devonport, and that when they sailed in totally embarrassed, everyone
on every ship was waving and honking at them, having found out
on the grapevine about the "torpedo" incident. I told
him I didn't see it on the log, and he said it was probably hidden,
and only put down as a refit, to cover the shame of it all.
Oh, and here's one thing I personally remember.....receiving a
card, either Christmas or birthday, and it was a picture of a
sailor's hat, with Veryan Bay shown on the sash, and a little
kitten either on top of the hat, or to the side with it's paws
on top of the hat. It's one of those things I wish I'd kept along
with my "navy" postcard collection.
Anyway, thanks for passing on the info. Bye the way, I should
have given you dad's phone number as well. It's 01642 477853.
Happy Easter to you also.

By chance the other night I came upon the Veryan Bay Assn. site,
and since then I've spoken to my Dad twice. As a young child I
received postcards from all over from my dad, and I still remember
him coming home on leave with the name Veryan Bay on his hat.
I'm in Niagara Falls, Canada, and he's in Yorkshire. He doesn't
have a computer, and can't get out much as he has severe emphysema
requiring oxygen all the time. However, the one thing he always
speaks about with fondness is the time in the navy and the ship
Veryan Bay. I wonder if it would be possible to send him some
information of the association, and how he can get the newsletters,
etc.
His name is Lawrence Irving. He was a wireless telegrapher on
the ship for most of 1952, from at least January 15, until October
30 of that year. I'm not sure if there was another tour of duty.
He was also a very good amateur photographer, exhibiting some
of his photographs, and one in particular was called "Last
Voyage" - a moving piece. He had three shots of this as I
recall, from different angles, but this is the one I kept in my
possession and have scanned. This was taken in 1951 when at Port
Stanley. Apparently another ship, the Burghead Bay was there also,
and due to leave on the Monday, so the two ships decided to have
a rugby match on the Sunday. The ground in the Falklands was very
hard, and the pitch like concrete. A young lieutenant from the
Burghead Bay was tackled and fell head first to the ground, hitting
his head on the "concrete". He never recovered from
the fractured skull the accident gave him. He was a Catholic,
and there was no catholic priest or church on land so word was
sent to his relatives who decided that he should be buried at
sea. This picture my father took was of that burial. An interesting
thing to note is that immediately after taking this photo, he
took another of the body just as it slid off the board, as did
others, and none of their cameras worked for that picture. Their
shutters jammed....spooky or what? The picture shows clearly the
ship's name on the gun turret.
Thank you.

Graham came across three more pictures from Dave Morgan's

Hope these may be of use to you. Dad had a hernia operation
yesterday, but I brought him home today. Seems alright but obviously
a little uncomfortable at the moment.
Read Eddie Carruthers narrative on your web page, he can certainly

Thought I would add my name to your e-mail in case anybody wants

Very much enjoyed Newsletter No.14, especially the bit by 'Doc'
Laity. I remember him very well, developing his oratory skills
on the occupants of the for'd messdeck (he was over on the starboard
side, No.1 Mess?, but everybody joined in the fun) mostly left-wing
politics. He seemed to enjoy putting himself across as a communist,
which didn't go down too well in the middle of the Korean War.
I got a very severe dose of sunburn coming down the Red Sea, which
he must have treated successfully since I survived!

Hello there Graham, I recall seeing one or two of the 'Bay
boats' and saw a couple during the Korean War (Cardigan Bay seems
to ring a bell ?) but I never served aboard one. However I wish
you luck and will keep you in mind if I meet any likely candidates.
I am the chairman of the Queensland Branch of the RNA so I just
might find a couple for you. I will announce the news to the meeting
next Monday (18th June)
Cheers, Ted Bates ('Down Under')
