HMS Veryan Bay

 
 
 One of twenty two Bay Class frigates -the heroic armed merchant ship
Jervis Bay gave rise to the naming of frigates after Bays.
 
 
 Pennant No. K651 HMS Veryan Bay was originally Loch Swannay.
One of three Bay Class frigates built by Charles Hills and Sons of Bristol, England.
Launched 11th Nov 1944. Displacement 1600 tons 307.33ft x 38.5ft x 12.75ft.
Armament: 4 x 4" d.p. 8 x 40mm AA guns. 2 x 20mm AA. 1 or 2 Hedgehogs ASW
2 shaft Triple expansion engine, 5,500 ihp. Max speed 19.5 knots Complement 157.
Designed for AA escort duties.
 
 
Unlike some of the Bay class which were never commissioned, placed in reserve and ultimately scrapped in the late 1950s, HMS Veryan Bay had a very active service.
She was completed in May 1945 and went straight to the Far East. From March 1947 to 1949.
 
 
 She served with the 2nd Frigate Flotilla in the Med and in 1950 the 7th and 8th Frigate Squadrons in South America and the West Indies.
In 1951 she was refitted in Devonport and returned to the American and West Indies in Feb 1952. Completed another refit at Devonport in 1953 and returned to West Indies and back home to Devonport in February 1954.
 
 
 September 1954 West Indies, South America, Antarctic, West Indies, North America and back home to Devonport in August 1955. January 1956 saw her in another refit at Devonport returning to the West Indies in March 1956.
 
 
 During March 1957 she returned to Devonport to reduce to Reserve.
On 1st July 1957 she arrived at Charlestown, Fife to be broken up by Shipbreaking Industries Ltd.
At some time (probably late 40s) she was allocated the pennant number F651.
